Stained glass route Friday evening November 20th 19:00-22:00

The “Grand Final” of the Light week in the Statenkwartier

Statenkwartier: open air museum for stained glass

When it comes to stained glass, the Statenkwartier can be considered as one large open-air museum. There is a huge diversity in styles, colours, and techniques. This is due to the fact that the Statenkwartier was built at the beginning of the 20th century, a period in which the use of stained glass in residential buildings was very fashionable.

Unfortunately, much of the beauty of this stained glass often goes unnoticed. After all, the splendour of stained glass can only be seen when it is lit. From inside the house, the stained glass can be admired during the day. But “outsiders” can only admire the glass in the evening when it is dark outside, when the lights inside the house are on and when the curtains are not drawn.

Stained glass route

This gave us the idea to organise a “stained glass route” during the winter months. We call on the inhabitants of the Statenkwartier to show the stained glass in their house by turning on the lights and keeping the curtains open on Friday evening November 20th from 19:00 to 22:00.

Walking, Warm cocoa and mulled Wine

A map will be made available indicating the streets with an abundance of (exceptionally beautiful) stained glass windows. This way you can make your own route and take a walk through the neighbourhood at your leisure. The map will be available on the website www.statenkwartier.net from mid November.

But it is also possible to join a guided walk in which you will learn more about this special cultural heritage. Chox and Plasman on the Frederik Hendriklaan will exceptionally be open on this evening to sell hot cocoa and mulled wine. At the end of the evening, at 22:00, there will be a special event on the Frederik Hendrikplein.

Contest

On this evening we will also hold a contest for the inhabitants of houses with nice stained glass windows. The challenge is:

Who presents his/her stained glass the most attractively?

There will be a prices awarded by an expert jury, but there will also be a price awarded by the public. So you can participate by poster GIL avondcasting your vote for the stained glass window you like best! And if you do, you also participate in a raffle in which you can win a gift voucher from “Kruid en Druif”. The award ceremony will take place on the closing night of the 100 Years of Statenkwartier celebration on Saturday, November 28th in the World Forum.
